Roblox Leverages AI and Human Moderation for Voice Chat Safety
2025-03-21 14:28:08The popular online game creation platform, Roblox, has been employing AI-powered machine learning for voice chat moderation for the past year. Given the platform's significant youth demographic, maintaining a safe online environment is a paramount concern. During the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2024, Roblox's Senior Technical Director, Kiran Bhat, and Head of Voice Safety, Hannes Heikinheimo, discussed the effectiveness of their AI moderation system while acknowledging the irreplaceable value of human moderators.
Bhat highlighted the complexities of real-time voice moderation during his presentation. "Monitoring voice chat in real-time is challenging. It's not just about understanding the words spoken, but also the tone and intensity of the speaker to determine malicious intent."
"Context also plays a crucial role in identifying offensive language. It's a multifaceted problem."
He explained how Roblox addresses these challenges by categorizing violations into four main types, which encompass 85% of all infractions. Furthermore, he noted that a "vast majority" of these violations can be detected using just 50 keywords. "If you've covered the top 50 keywords for these categories," Bhat stated, "you're already in a good position."
Heikinheimo shared impressive results from their AI moderation system. After a year of implementation across 31 countries, reports of violations per "active chat time" have been halved. One clear advantage of AI is its lack of emotional fatigue, making it "more efficient and consistent than humans in identifying blatant violations." However, Heikinheimo emphasized the continued importance of human moderators in discerning nuanced meaning and intent.
Heikinheimo added, "Humans still excel at judging those borderline cases or rare instances where we don't have sufficient data to train the machine learning system effectively. In these situations, human judgment remains paramount."
