Adding fuel to the Nier sequel rumors, producer Yosuke Saito hinted at a new game announcement in 2025 during a 4Gamer year-end interview. With 2025 marking the 15th anniversary of the Nier series, many believe this is the perfect opportunity to reveal a new title.
Saito stated, "2025 is a milestone year, the 15th anniversary of the Nier series, so I'd like to do something for it! What should we do... Maybe something about the next game, or the development related to it... I'm always listening to the fans' expectations."
Nier: Automata, developed by PlatinumGames and published by Square Enix, is an action RPG released in 2017 for PS4 and PC, followed by an Xbox One port in 2018, and a Nintendo Switch release in 2022. Serving as a sequel to the 2010 spin-off Nier (itself a spin-off of the Drakengard series), Automata depicts a future where Earth has been overrun by machine lifeforms, forcing humanity to take refuge on the moon.
Players control android soldiers 2B and 9S as they fight to reclaim Earth. The game boasts 27 different endings (A-Z plus a DLC ending), with five main story endings, one DLC ending, and the remaining 21 triggered by specific in-game deaths, failures, or actions.
Nier: Automata's development began in 2014 with Yosuke Saito as producer, Yoko Taro as director and writer, music by Keiichi Okabe and Keigo Hoashi, title design by Atsushi Inaba of PlatinumGames, and main character designs by Akihiko Yoshida. With over 9 million units shipped across all platforms, the game's critical and commercial success has solidified Nier as a prominent franchise.
