Wizards of the Coast Cancels Unannounced AAA Horror Game Project

A recent report indicates that Wizards of the Coast (WotC) has quietly canceled an unannounced AAA horror game project. The game, in development by WotC's subsidiary Skeleton Key, remains shrouded in mystery, with little information ever publicly revealed.

The news of the cancellation surfaced through a LinkedIn post by Skeleton Key's audio director, Nassim Ait-Kaci, who mentioned seeking new opportunities after the project's "unfortunate cancellation." WotC has yet to officially confirm the news.

Skeleton Key, established by WotC in 2022, was intended to develop AAA titles.  The studio brought in veteran BioWare developers Charles Boyd and Christian Dailey, known for their work on Star Wars: The Old Republic.  Hints suggested the studio’s project leaned towards the horror genre, but details remained scarce.

This cancellation marks another instance of WotC shelving projects. In 2023, the company canceled five unannounced games, resulting in 15 layoffs. While this latest news might raise concerns, it doesn't signal a complete halt to game development at WotC.

Reports from 2024 suggested that Hasbro, WotC's parent company, intends to continue developing Dungeons and Dragons video games, capitalizing on the immense success of Baldur's Gate 3.  The specific nature of these projects remains unknown.

For now, WotC's primary focus remains on its flagship brands, Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons and Dragons. The company recently outlined its 2025 plans for D&D, beginning with the release of the new Monster Manual. Further releases include a new Starter Set, revisiting the classic Keep on the Borderlands adventure, and an official player's guide for the Forgotten Realms setting.
