Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel: Sticking with First-Person and Aiming for Next-Gen

The highly anticipated sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, codenamed Project Orion, will maintain the immersive first-person perspective that defined its predecessor.  This information comes from a recent job listing posted by CD Projekt Red's Boston branch, offering a glimpse into the game's development progress.

Announced in October 2022, Project Orion has remained largely shrouded in mystery.  However, CDPR's job postings have occasionally provided clues about the sequel's direction.  A recent advertisement for a Senior Gameplay Animator emphasizes the creation of engaging first-person experiences, strongly suggesting that the sequel will inherit this core gameplay mechanic.

Cyberpunk 2077's first-person perspective, initially met with skepticism, ultimately became one of its most celebrated features.  It enhanced the game's sense of scale, intimacy, and overall immersion.  CDPR's decision to stick with this perspective for Project Orion demonstrates a commitment to building upon the successful foundation established by the original.

The first-person view in Cyberpunk 2077 was lauded for its immersive qualities, allowing players to deeply connect with the game's world and characters. The sequel aims to capitalize on this strength, further refining and enhancing the first-person experience.

With Cyberpunk 2077 achieving impressive sales figures, exceeding 30 million copies by the end of 2024, CDPR's decision to retain the first-person perspective is understandable.  Rather than reinventing the wheel, they appear focused on refining and expanding upon a proven formula. It is also possible, based on the previous game, that Project Orion may offer a third-person perspective while driving, though this remains unconfirmed.

While Project Orion entered pre-production in late 2022, the recent job listing indicates that the game is still in its early stages.  Active development may not commence until The Witcher 4 (Project Polaris) nears completion.  Given that Project Polaris began full production around November 2024, a late 2027 release seems likely. This timeline suggests Project Orion might launch in the late 2020s or early 2030s, potentially targeting next-generation consoles and PC, bypassing the current PS5 and Xbox Series X/S generation.
