Nintendo surprised fans during its March 27th Direct with the announcement of Nintendo Today, a free smartphone app designed to deliver news directly to users.  Available now on iOS and Android devices, the app is positioned as the primary source of information for the upcoming Switch 2 console, expected to be showcased in greater detail during the April 2nd Nintendo Direct.

The March 27th Direct primarily focused on games launching for the current Switch system throughout 2025.  Viewers were treated to updates on several titles, including revivals of the Patapon and Rhythm Heaven series.  New gameplay footage of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond was also revealed, showcasing Samus Aran’s new psychic abilities.  While a concrete release date remains elusive, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is anticipated to launch later in 2025.

Best Buy Canada may have inadvertently hinted at the pre-order launch date for the upcoming Nintendo Switch console as the April Nintendo Direct approaches. This comes after a flurry of game trailers and the announcement of the Virtual Game Cards feature during the Direct, where Nintendo's Shinya Takahashi handed the stage to Shigeru Miyamoto for the app's unveiling.

The Nintendo Today app requires a free Nintendo Account and approximately 200MB of storage space. Upon logging in, users can customize the app with themes based on popular Nintendo franchises like Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Splatoon.  The app also includes video content related to games like Pikmin 4 and supports home screen widgets, including a thematic calendar, for both Android and iOS devices.

Users can personalize their news feeds to receive updates on specific Switch games and activities, such as the Tyranitar Tera Raid battles recently added to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.  According to Miyamoto, Nintendo Today will be the key platform for staying informed about the Switch 2 console, with a full reveal anticipated during the April 2nd Nintendo Direct. Details about the new hardware itself, however, remain scarce.

The launch of the Nintendo Today app, combined with rumors of a three-phase rollout plan for the Switch 2, continues to fuel excitement and speculation.  All eyes are now on Nintendo's upcoming April 2nd Direct for concrete details about the future of the Switch platform.
