Rumors are swirling about potential accessories for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, fueled by newly discovered patent documentation. While Nintendo officially announced the console on January 16th, 2025, with a 2025 release window, details regarding accessories remain scarce.  The reveal trailer highlighted key features like magnetic Joy-Cons and backward compatibility, but further information is anticipated during the April 2025 Nintendo Direct dedicated to the Switch 2.

The patent in question describes a unique coupling structure using a magnetic connection point, enabling two apparatuses to rotate relative to each other. Game Rant's review of the documentation specifically mentions a smartphone holder as a potential application. However, the patent's scope is significantly broader, hinting at wider possibilities without delving into specific details.

This innovative connection structure could facilitate dual-screen gaming experiences by utilizing both the console and a connected smartphone.  Nintendo has a history of exploring dual-display technology with consoles like the DS, 3DS, and Wii U.  A 2023 patent even showcased a dual-screen device resembling a splittable 3DS, further demonstrating Nintendo's interest in this area.

Intriguingly, the new patent also mentions potential applications for "bedclothes fitting instruments." This suggests the magnetic connection mechanism could be employed for securing objects to soft materials, broadening its functionality beyond gaming.  The design's flexibility also opens the door for a modular accessory system, allowing various devices to magnetically attach to the console.  A general-purpose console stand is another potential use case.

It's important to remember that a patent's existence doesn't guarantee its commercialization. According to a GreyB report, 2024 was Nintendo's least prolific year for patents in over a decade, although they still secured 154 patents and filed for many more.  Nintendo typically averages around 270 patent filings annually, with a significant portion never seeing direct commercial application.  Despite this, we may learn more about official Switch 2 accessories during the dedicated Nintendo Direct scheduled for April 2nd, 2025.
