Overwatch 2's New Hero Perks: A Balancing Act?
2025-02-22 07:02:52Season 15 of Overwatch 2 has arrived, bringing with it a significant addition: the hero perks system. This system allows players to enhance their chosen hero's abilities during matches by selecting up to two perks. Each hero has four unique perks – two minor and two major – with only one from each pair selectable per match. Players earn points through good performance to level up their perks throughout the match.
This new system adds a dynamic layer to gameplay, providing fresh ways to engage with familiar heroes. However, some perks draw inspiration from older abilities, and in Bastion's case, this has led to the return of his self-heal, sparking debate among players.
While the perks offer exciting new possibilities, some fans are apprehensive about Bastion's regained self-heal. Previously a source of balance issues, Bastion’s classic self-heal ability, combined with a new perk resembling his original ultimate, has returned. One player, SammyIsSeiso, highlighted the potential problem with a clip showcasing Bastion out-healing damage from a powered-up Zarya beam.
The primary concern lies in the absence of a resource meter for Bastion's self-heal. Unlike his previous iteration, he can now heal indefinitely unless interrupted by a stun or hack. While requiring selection as a major perk – typically unlocked later in a match – this unlimited healing potential is worrying some players. Modern Bastion lacks the resource limitations of his predecessor, raising concerns about his survivability.
The return of Bastion's self-heal has sparked debate. In Overwatch 2, his abilities were significantly reworked to address previous balance issues. Now, there are fears this new perk could make him excessively durable while retaining his significant damage output.
