Crytek Pauses Crysis 4 Development, Announces Layoffs

German game developer Crytek, known for the Crysis series, Far Cry, and Hunt: Showdown, has announced a pause in the development of Crysis 4.  This news comes alongside the unfortunate announcement of layoffs affecting approximately 15% of the company's workforce, impacting around 60 employees.

In an official statement, Crytek explained the difficult decision stems from the need to maintain financial stability while continuing to invest in the successful Hunt: Showdown title. The studio emphasized ongoing efforts to reduce costs and operational expenses before reaching this unavoidable conclusion. Affected employees will receive severance packages and career assistance services.

Crytek, founded by the Yerli brothers and renowned for its proprietary CryEngine, has a rich history in the gaming industry.  From the original Far Cry to the visually stunning Crysis trilogy, the studio has consistently pushed the boundaries of graphics and gameplay. They also developed Ryse: Son of Rome and currently maintain the popular online multiplayer bounty hunting game, Hunt: Showdown.

The development of Crysis 4, a highly anticipated next-gen sequel to Crysis 3, was initially announced in 2022 with a promise to leverage cutting-edge technology and hardware capabilities.  Mattias Engström, formerly director of Hitman 3, joined the project in 2022, followed by a wave of new hires in the subsequent year.  However, development has been on hold since Q3 2024.

While the future of Crysis 4 remains uncertain, fans can still experience the enhanced visuals of the Crysis Remastered Trilogy, which includes support for Deep Learning Super Sampling on PC.

Hunt: Showdown continues to thrive, recently introducing the popular Ghost Face character to its roster.  Crytek appears dedicated to supporting and evolving this title amidst the current restructuring.
